This discussion with Ana Milena highlights the difficulty in categorizing spaces in different ways, as the territory of Cazucá itself can be read as both urban – through the presence of people living there – and as rural – through zoning decisions and the nonengagement of the state. Ana Milena’s discussion of the rural and urban spaces in and around Bogotá demonstrate the way in which the government sees these issues as a problem of space – more particularly a problem of proximity, locality or geography, all of which render people invisible rather than recognizing the embodied experiences of those within the spaces. The rendering of spaces as of less concern to those in authority, and consequently to those who have fled, as seemingly irredeemable or lost manifests in sentiments of profound disenfranchisement and articulations of the failing by the state of its obligations.2 As bodies-out-of-place, the imposition of violent categories forces such people ‘into the savage spaces within an urban topography divided by logics of hyper-exclusion and hyper-inclusion’ (Coleman 2007, 209). This disjuncture renders the space as violent and justifying of exclusion, while eliding the activities and actions of those in this space would challenge such narratives.
